Suddenly Feeling All-In With the 2012 New York Knicks

February 19, 2012 1 comment

As recently as early January of this year I was extremely critical of the 2012 New York Knicks for blowing apart the promising young nucleus that made the playoffs last year. The reason I was so disappointed was because as recently as January the Knicks didn’t look like a professional basketball team. They looked like two professionals, Amare and Carmelo, awkwardly trying to coexist with a shoddy supporting cast.

Since then things have changed. The most important of those changes was the extremely unexpected emergence of a real point guard in Jeremy Lin, but I am not really interested in talking about him specifically since his story has been heavily covered in the media and is still unfolding. The more recent story that I personally think might push these Knicks into the threshold of being a great team is the acquisition of JR Smith. During the lockout Smith signed an ill-advised contract to play in the Chinese Basketball Association that did not allow him to come back to the NBA immediately after the lockout ended. Read more…

The Disappointing 2012 New York Knicks: From a Non-Knicks Fan

A Big-3 yes, but can they overcome a roster of bums? No.

As of January 8th of this lockout-shortened season, the New York Knicks are 4-4 after eight games. Seeing the Knicks come out to a mediocre start isn’t anything new to New York fans in the last few years. Including last year, which was highlighted by the acquisitions of Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks have only made the playoffs twice in the last ten years. Read more…

Dwight Howard and Chris Paul on the New York Knicks?

Ok, quick thought in the midst of all the NBA trade rumors that are flying around. Here are the facts:

– Chris Paul wants to go to New York but they already have Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, both of whom have large contracts.
– Dwight Howard will most likely be leaving Orlando for a variety of big market options

So, how things are the Knicks will be hard pressed to get either Paul or Howard due to their cap being nearly completely full with Carmelo and Amare. Somewhere someone was suggesting that the Heat trade LeBron James for Howard, one-for-one. That will probably never happen after all the hoopla that was involved around the Heat in the last year and a half, but if it did it would probably be a smart (and ruthless) move by Heat GM Pat Riley. Everyone saw the awkwardness between LeBron and Wade in the Finals last year when one of the two had to take the big shots. Adding Howard to Wade and Bosh on the Heat would make them a well balanced team.

That got me thinking though. Amare and Carmelo both play a very similar position and are both ball stoppers on offense. Howard is a true Center (best in the league) and Paul is the truest of Point Guards (best in the league). Even though the Knicks went through ton of crap in the last two years to get Carmelo and Amare, if they were smart (and extremely ruthless) they should swap their two stars for Paul and Howard.

I would much rather have a great Center and a great Point Guard instead of two good/great Power Forwards.

It would never happen though.
