Edmonton Oilers 2011 Trade Deadline, Hemsky And Penner

Right now the Oilers hold two of the biggest trade targets approaching this years trade deadline. Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner.

Hemsky Breaking Through The San Jose Defense

I have always loved Hemsky for his ability to dangle around any defender he wants, and his ability to make even the crappiest players *cough* Shawn Horcoff *cough* look like actual NHL players. He can bring your team back from any deficit, most famously in game 6 of the ’06 playoffs vs Detroit when he scored 2 goals along with playoff hero Fernando Pisani to come back from 3-0, win the game, and clinch the series. He is also one of the best passers in the game, making him a key player on the Oilers. But that’s when he is healthy. He has never played a full 82 game season with his shortest season coming last year when he missed 60 games. Its no wonder the Oilers were so terrible with their best player only playing 22 games. In those 22 games he had 22 points.

Penner And His Huge Ass Screen The Vancouver Goalie

If you asked me the question “If you could choose one player to get traded away from the Oilers, who would it be?” three years ago, I would say Dustin Penner in a heart beat. Watching him skate around and do pretty much nothing while making way too much money killed me every night. I hated this man with a burning passion and would have done anything to see him and his ridiculously large contract leave Edmonton forever. If you were to ask me today if I wanted the Oilers to trade Penner, it would be completely different. Today he is on the top line with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky and it would be a crime for him to be on any other line. His play from last year has continued into this year and has turned him from one of the most hated people on the Oilers roster, to one that a lot of people feel will be a key piece in the near future for the copper and blue. It’s funny how 20 extra points, a little effort, and an extremely dickish attitude can win my heart over.

When the trade deadline rolls around in a few days, I don’t want to see either of these guys going anywhere. These guys are in their primes and if they are willing to sign reasonable contract extensions next year, they are going to be key veterans on this young Oilers team. The only way I will be ok with seeing either of these guys going is if the Oilers can get a young up-and-coming NHL player and a good draft pick. If that offer isn’t on the table, I think the Oilers should keep these two around for as long as they can.

Come on Sean really? The Oilers need to trade either one of the two this year. They have so many other glaring weaknesses mostly on defence. Keep in mind that both played at a high level this year as well as last year and they are in the same position, arguably better now with Hall/Ebs, yet still with the same result. They will not get to where they want to be if they don’t trade one and upgrade other glaring weaknesses. They have other players that can fill the role either of these players play. Now it’s true that I do hate the oilers with a passion and this may just be a drunken rant but they need to trade someone to upgrade their defence.
